Renovations Overview

Occasionally, plant coverage is lost on green roofs due to any combination of: lack of proper maintenance, nutrient-deprived media, 3rd party damage, system failure, design/installation flaws, and so on. Our team is well-equipped to perform full or partial green roof renovations - from roof cleanup and soil remediation, to plant installation and irrigation calibration.

Our plant renovations can be categorized into three phases:

1.) Soil Testing and System Diagnosis

During phase one, we visit the project to acquire a soil sample for lab-testing (included in TCCP program). We inspect the roof damage in person and identify potential underlying causes that may need to be addressed prior to plant installation.

2.) Cleanup and Soil Preparation

During phase two, we remove all debris, unwanted plant media, plant netting in the areas to be replanted. Once the media is cleared, we loosen and level the media to prep for fresh sedum blankets and/or cuttings.

3.) Plant Installation

During phase three, we deliver, unload, vertically mobilize, and install fresh plants to restore desired coverage in damaged areas.

Blanket Strategy

The fast-track solution to restore plant coverage on sedum-vegetated green roofs. After existing plant media has been removed and the soil has been confirmed to be viable, fresh sedum blankets are installed in bare areas to immediately restore coverage. This solution mitigates further costs down the road by suppressing exponential weed growth and reducing erosion potential. Our sedum blankets can be installed as shipped, or they can be customized to fit the contours of small/irregular bare areas, creating seamless coverage on the day of installation. New sedum blankets have a variety of applications: They can transform a struggling green roof into a perfect green roof, or they can restore coverage in specific areas subject to foot-traffic. They can even restore a green roof from the brink of total plant failure. Once you choose sedum blankets as your green roof renovation solution, the success of your project is guaranteed.

Cuttings Strategy

The conservative solution to restore plant coverage on sedum-vegetated roofs. After existing plant media has been removed and the soil has been confirmed to be viable, sedum cuttings ranging from 1” to 4” in length are applied to bare areas at a rate of 1 lb per 5 sft, where they may take root and gradually restore coverage over a growing season. While the cuttings establish their roots however, they will be vulnerable to extreme rain and wind events.

Maintenance Strategy

In certain cases, a green roof in sub-standard condition (declining plant coverage, weeds taking advantage, poor media nutrition, etc.) can be restored without any the need for a costly plant installation. This strategy focuses on optimizing the health and coverage of existing plants already on the green roof over multiple growing seasons. Over a two year span, a green roof with as little as 50% sedum coverage and high weed pressure can have its sedum coverage restored to 85% or greater with low weed pressure. This occurs with the exclusive utilization of our preventative and proactive maintenance protocols. The distinction between this scope and our TCCP maintenance program is based on increased labor requirements to restore coverage - our maintenance renovation strategy includes a renovation surcharge for addressing high weed pressure and bare areas throughout the renovation process. While this strategy works by itself in improving sedum coverage, it is also the perfect insurance policy for a project undergoing a plant renovation, as this will give the newly installed plants the attention they need in their first months/years of establishment.
